A hat to get from here to there. A hat to get the work done. A hat to fit in. A hat to become whoever the situation asks me to be.
To Wear Many Hats grew from a neurological diary I kept to aid my recovery from autistic burnout. Each hat corresponds to a different episode of sensory overwhelm, externalising masked lived experiences into sculptural forms.
The work reflects on masking: the gradual habit of adapting ourselves to expectations until it becomes difficult to recognise who we are underneath them. The installation asks what it costs when adaptation becomes second nature and denying our own pain stops feeling like a choice.
